Ask a payments engineer which blockchain to use for moving value from Manila to Mexico City, and two names surface immediately: the XRP Ledger and Stellar. Both were purpose-built for payments rather than general-purpose computation, both settle in seconds for a fraction of a cent, and both trace back to the same engineer — Jed McCaleb, who co-founded Ripple and then left to help launch Stellar in 2014. The technical resemblance is not a coincidence. What actually separates them in 2026 is governance, distribution strategy, and which institutions have committed real volume.
Same Roots, Opposite Business Models
The XRP Ledger is open-source and run by independent validators, but Ripple — a venture-backed private company — remains its most visible contributor and holds a large share of XRP in scheduled escrow. Ripple sells settlement software and liquidity services to banks and payment providers, and those commercial relationships drive much of the XRPL's institutional pipeline.
Stellar is stewarded by the Stellar Development Foundation, a nonprofit. SDF funds protocol development and issues grants, but it does not sell bank settlement software the way Ripple does. Instead it cultivates anchors — regulated local partners that issue and redeem tokenized fiat at the edges of the network. The difference shapes everything downstream: XRPL courts the institution, Stellar courts the corridor.
Settlement Speed: Effectively a Tie
Neither network uses mining. The XRP Ledger runs a federated consensus process in which validators agree on a transaction set each round; XRPL's own documentation states that "this consensus process takes 4-6 seconds." Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement design where nodes choose their own quorum slices. Stellar's developer docs note that the network's "ledger close time is constrained to a few seconds."
In practice both finalize in roughly the same window — under ten seconds, with no probabilistic confirmation depth to wait out. Compared against correspondent banking, where wires routinely take one to five business days, the gap between XRPL and Stellar is rounding error. Anyone choosing between them on settlement speed alone is optimizing the wrong variable.
Fees: Both Negligible, Structured Differently
Here the designs diverge in an interesting way. The XRP Ledger charges a reference transaction cost of 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP. Critically, that fee is not paid to validators — "the XRP is irrevocably destroyed." XRP supply is therefore mildly deflationary, and every transaction burns a sliver of it whether it succeeds or fails.
Stellar's base fee is 100 stroops per operation, a stroop being one ten-millionth of a lumen (0.0000001 XLM). Stellar's public materials frame the cost in more digestible terms, describing the network as "typically charging less than 1 US cent for every 100,000 operations."
Both networks handle congestion through market pricing rather than fixed queues. XRPL's open ledger cost "increases exponentially for each transaction included in the open ledger" once a soft limit is hit. Stellar applies surge pricing once volume exceeds roughly 1,000 operations per ledger, sorting transactions by inclusion fee bid. Under normal conditions, neither cost is material to a remittance business.
Throughput: Read the Marketing Carefully
XRPL is widely marketed at 1,500 transactions per second. That figure describes tested capability under favorable conditions, not observed mainnet behavior — Ripple's own CTO has publicly pushed back on citing it as a live-network number, putting realistic current capacity closer to several hundred TPS. Stellar's practical ceiling is inferable from its own surge-pricing threshold: roughly 1,000 operations per ledger across a few-second close time.
Both networks operate far below capacity today. Throughput is not the binding constraint for cross-border payments in 2026 — liquidity at the endpoints is.
Cross-Currency Mechanics
Both chains embed a decentralized exchange directly in the protocol, which is what makes them payment networks rather than simple transfer rails. Stellar's path payments let a sender specify "send X of asset A so the recipient receives Y of asset B," with the protocol routing through order books automatically. XRPL offers equivalent pathfinding and can autobridge trades through XRP when no direct order book exists.
The philosophical split: XRP is positioned as a neutral bridge asset between currency pairs, while Stellar increasingly treats issued stablecoins as the medium and XLM primarily as the fee and anti-spam asset.
Stablecoins Are Now the Real Battleground
The most consequential development of the past two years is that both networks stopped competing on native-token velocity and started competing on stablecoin hosting.
Stellar landed a significant win in June 2026 when MoneyGram launched MGUSD on Stellar, issued by Bridge, the Stripe-owned regulated issuer. MoneyGram is not a crypto-native firm experimenting at the margins; it is a legacy remittance giant making its own dollar token the foundation of its network. Stellar also hosts Circle's USDC and EURC, and Stellar's payments materials cite over 475,000 global cash-to-crypto on and off ramp locations — the physical last mile that most chains simply do not have.
Ripple's counterpunch is RLUSD, its own regulated dollar stablecoin, paired with a push into institutional settlement, custody, and prime brokerage. Ripple has pursued federal banking authorization in the US, positioning RLUSD for treasury desks and trading venues rather than for cash pickup counters in secondary cities.
Programmability
Stellar added smart contracts through Soroban, which went live on mainnet with Protocol 20 in February 2024. Soroban prices execution through a resource fee covering CPU instructions, ledger I/O, transaction size, and storage rent, layered on top of the ordinary inclusion fee. It composes with existing Stellar assets, so an issuer can wrap a stablecoin in programmable mint, burn, or compliance logic.
XRPL has taken a more conservative route, extending functionality through governed amendments and sidechains rather than exposing a general-purpose virtual machine on the main ledger. That is a deliberate reliability tradeoff — fewer novel failure modes on the rail that moves institutional money.
Which One Actually Wins?
There is no single winner, and any article claiming one is selling something.
- Choose the XRP Ledger if you are a bank, broker, or trading venue that needs institutional-grade settlement, deep exchange liquidity for XRP itself, and a counterparty (Ripple) that will sign a contract and provide support.
- Choose Stellar if you are building consumer remittances, payroll, or disbursements into emerging markets, where anchor coverage, cash-out density, and turnkey tooling like the Stellar Disbursement Platform matter far more than raw protocol specs.
The honest summary is that XRPL optimizes for the wholesale layer and Stellar for the retail last mile. Their technical specifications have converged to near-parity — seconds to finality, sub-cent fees, built-in currency exchange. The decision now rests on which network already has regulated partners standing where your money needs to land.
